Los Angeles specifics
Aging housing stock: Many LA homes built in the 1920s-1960s have narrow doorways (28-30 inches), small bathrooms, and step-up entries — all barriers for aging residents. We assess the full home and prioritize modifications by fall-risk impact.
Rental modifications: LA tenants with disabilities can modify their units under fair housing law. Landlords must allow reasonable modifications. We document all work with photos for move-out restoration if required.
VA and insurance: Some modifications (grab bars, ramps) may be covered by VA benefits, long-term care insurance, or Medicaid waiver programs. We provide itemized invoices in the format these programs require.

Frequently asked questions
Can grab bars go into tile?
Yes, but the mounting must go through the tile into studs or solid blocking behind the tile. Tile-only mounting will fail under load. We use carbide-tipped drill bits, apply silicone around penetrations to prevent moisture, and anchor into framing.
How wide does a doorway need to be for a wheelchair?
ADA requires 32 inches clear width (36 preferred). Most older LA homes have 28-30 inch doorways. Widening involves removing the existing frame, cutting the stud, adding a new header, and installing a wider frame. We can usually widen by 4-6 inches without structural issues.
Do you install stairlifts?
We do not install stairlifts — those require manufacturer-certified installers. We install all other accessibility modifications and can coordinate with stairlift vendors for a comprehensive project.
Is this covered by insurance?
Medicare does not cover home modifications. Some long-term care insurance policies, VA benefits, and Medicaid waiver programs do. We provide itemized invoices formatted for insurance submission.
Can I get these modifications in a rental?
Yes. Federal Fair Housing Act and California law require landlords to allow reasonable disability-related modifications at tenant expense. The landlord can require restoration on move-out for non-standard modifications, but cannot refuse installation.
