Closet organization: Elfa, Container Store, IKEA, custom builds
$800 of bins from the Container Store and you still can't find what you need. Real closet work is a 30-minute measure and the right hardware — then it stays organized without another IG hack.
What closet organization covers
DIY vs. hire — which makes sense for your job
When DIY works
IKEA PAX assembly is doable DIY (it's the most-assembled furniture worldwide), but the anchor step — bolting the back panel into a stud — is where 40% of DIY installs go sideways. Elfa wall-track is even more dependent on stud finding. Single wall-rod swap = easy DIY.
When to hire
A pro uses a stud-finder, ceiling-to-floor level, measures existing closet dimensions, and builds to fit. Most reach-in closets: 2-4 hours. PAX wardrobe (3-door): 3-5 hours. Walk-in custom build: 1-2 days.
Permit, license, and safety
Closet organization is pure handyman scope. No permit, no license required at any residential scope under §7048. Closet as defined here is a storage installation — not structural framing. New closet construction with framing new walls would require a permit, but retrofit of existing spaces does not.
