Window treatment install: blinds, shades, curtains, shutters
Blinds that slip, curtain rods that rip out of drywall, motorized shades that never paired. Mount them right once and they last a decade; mount them wrong and you're patching drywall before the first guest.
What window treatments covers
DIY vs. hire — which makes sense for your job
When DIY works
Cellular shades and roller shades in standard windows: easy DIY if you're handy with a drill. Plantation shutters: not DIY — they need precise cut-to-fit frames and squared installation. Motorized: battery units are DIY-friendly; hardwired units need low-voltage wiring (licensed scope past $500).
When to hire
A pro measures each window inside + outside, confirms depth for inside-mount vs outside, uses a level on mount points, and hangs with matching hardware. Most single-window treatments: 15-30 min. Plantation shutters: 45-60 min per window.
Permit, license, and safety
Window treatment install is handyman scope. No permit, no license required for standard blinds, shades, shutters, or curtains. §7048 applies.
Exception: motorized hardwired shades with new electrical circuits fall under C-10 licensed electrician if over $500 scope. Battery-powered motorized shades are DIY/handyman scope since no hardwiring.
