Locks & security in Los Angeles
Deadbolt swaps, smart locks, rekey, door reinforcement, peepholes, security cameras, motion lights. Handymen for swap-ins, licensed locksmith for break-in damage.
What LA lock and security work covers
Most home security is done at the front door — Grade 1 deadbolt, long strike plate screws into the stud, and a good peephole or doorbell camera. Most LA homes we visit have builder-grade Grade 3 locks with 3/4" screws into the jamb, which a firm kick pops open in seconds. Fixing that is a 45-minute job that genuinely raises the bar.
Our LA pros handle: lock swap (standard and smart), rekey (existing lock, new key), strike plate reinforcement (3" screws into stud), door reinforcement kits, peephole install, smart camera / doorbell camera install, motion-sensor floodlight install. Break-in damage repair (kicked door, broken lock, jamb torn out) requires carpentry + locksmith work; we coordinate both.

How it works

Los Angeles specifics
Grade 1 vs. Grade 3 deadbolts (ANSI rating): builder-grade homes in LA come with Grade 3 (residential-only) deadbolts. Grade 1 (commercial-grade) costs $40–80 more, resists pick/bump/drill better, and lasts 10× longer. We install Grade 1 unless you specify otherwise.
3" strike plate screws: short strike plate screws (3/4", stock install) only engage drywall + jamb. Kick-in tears the jamb free. Swapping to 3" screws that go into the stud transforms kick resistance at zero cost. We do this automatically on every lock install.
Rental-friendly smart locks: LA renters want smart locks without changing the landlord\'s hardware. Options: Level Lock (fits inside existing deadbolt — landlord\'s key still works), August Wi-Fi (retrofit to existing thumbturn, no hardware change externally). Both renter-approved and reversible.
HOA and exterior cameras: many LA condos and HOAs require written approval for exterior-visible cameras. Interior-facing cameras typically don\'t. Video doorbells specifically are often restricted. Check HOA rules before install.
Motion lights and LA light pollution: LA\'s dark-sky ordinance (in some neighborhoods) restricts 360° unshielded floodlights. We use downward-aimed fixtures with motion + timer to stay friendly with neighbors and code.

Frequently asked questions
Moving into a new LA rental — rekey or replace?
Rekey is usually right and landlord-approved. Ask landlord first — most will let you rekey at your cost (landlord keeps a copy of the new key). Replacement may require landlord permission and replacement cost to restore at move-out.
Best smart lock for an LA condo?
Level Lock (fits inside existing deadbolt, exterior looks unchanged) is ideal for HOAs that restrict exterior changes. August Wi-Fi (retrofit to thumbturn) is renter-friendly. Schlage Encode (full deadbolt replacement) has the best keypad for shared access.
Will 3" strike plate screws really make a difference?
Massive. Most kick-in burglaries succeed against the short jamb screws. 3" screws anchor the strike into the stud behind the jamb. Same hardware; transforms kick resistance. We do this on every lock install automatically.
Someone kicked in my door last night — what do I do?
Call a licensed locksmith (we'll refer) + a carpenter the same day. The jamb is likely torn out and the door may need a new lock and reinforcement. Temporary board-up while parts arrive. Our locksmith partners do 24/7 in most LA areas.
Security camera that doesn't need Wi-Fi?
Uncommon and expensive. Most modern cameras need Wi-Fi (for cloud storage + alerts). Local-storage options: SD card cameras (Eufy local storage) or network video recorder (NVR) systems with PoE cameras. We install PoE NVR systems for full local-only setup.
My HOA said no exterior cameras — what now?
Options: interior-side doorbell camera (Ring Peephole Cam, mounts in existing peephole), audio-only doorbell (Chime), or camera angled from a garage / balcony already covered by HOA rules. We'll talk through options.
Motion floodlights vs. constant-on?
Motion-activated is better for LA (lower light pollution, lower electricity, neighbor-friendly). Best settings: 30-second timer, dusk-to-dawn override, motion-sensitivity tuned to people-level (not cars passing). Dark-sky compliant fixtures direct light downward.
