Los Angeles specifics

Hillside pools: Many LA hillside homes (Hollywood Hills, Bel Air, Pacific Palisades) have pools on steep grades. Fencing on slopes requires stepped panels or racked sections — more complex and costlier than flat-grade installs.

LADBS inspection: Permanent pool fencing triggers a LADBS inspection. Our installers coordinate scheduling and ensure the gate hardware, fence height, and spacing all pass on the first visit.

Real estate transactions: Pool barrier compliance is checked during home sales. Non-compliant pools can delay or kill a transaction. We offer expedited install for escrow-driven timelines.

Frequently asked questions

What does SB442 require?

California SB442 requires at least one of seven approved safety features for residential pools: isolation fencing, safety cover, exit alarms on doors, self-closing doors, pool alarm, or a combination. Most homeowners choose a 60-inch mesh or metal fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate.

How tall does a pool fence need to be?

Minimum 60 inches (5 feet) from the outside grade. No climbable elements (horizontal rails) on the pool side. Gate must open outward, self-close from any position, and self-latch. Latch must be at least 54 inches from grade.

Do I need a permit for pool fencing?

Permanent fencing (iron, aluminum, glass) over 42 inches typically requires a LADBS permit. Removable mesh fencing generally does not. We handle permit applications and inspection scheduling for permanent installs.

What about pool covers as an alternative to fencing?

ASTM F1346-compliant safety covers are an accepted SB442 alternative. They must support 485 lbs and prevent a child from entering the water. Power safety covers are the most practical option — manual covers are rarely used correctly. Cost: $5,000-15,000 for a power cover.

Is this checked during home sales?

Yes. Pool barrier compliance is part of the standard California real estate disclosure. Non-compliant pools can delay escrow. We offer expedited installs for escrow timelines — typically 3-5 business days from quote to completion.
