Fence and deck service: repair, refinish, and gate work

LA sun cooks fences and decks harder than most of California. Posts rot from the inside, boards splinter on the south side, stain fails in three summers. A repair-first visit — not a full demo — is usually the smart move.

DIY vs. hire — which makes sense for your job

When DIY works

Single-post replacement and board swaps are weekend-project territory if you own a post-hole digger, bag of concrete, and circular saw. Staining a deck is DIY-friendly but labor-intensive (1-2 days, pressure wash + dry + stain). Full fence replacement — hire or rent help; it's a multi-day project with heavy materials.

When to hire

A pro brings a powered auger, level, tamper, and the right concrete + cedar lumber to match. Gate repair is often quick (30 minutes to 2 hours). Full-fence work is multi-day scope. Staining a 200-sq-ft deck: 1-1.5 days including dry time.

Permit, license, and safety

California fence rules vary by zoning, but common thresholds: residential fences over 6 ft in most zones require a building permit, and anything over 8 ft definitely does. Corner-lot setback rules (typically 3-6 ft from sidewalk or property line) apply across most LA jurisdictions — check your specific zone.

Decks: raised decks over 30" above grade, or over 200 sq ft, require permits in most CA jurisdictions. Railings must meet code (36-42" height, 4" max baluster spacing). Ground-level decks and small patios under these thresholds are permit-free and handyman-scope.
