Gutter and drainage service: cleaning, repair, guards, extensions

One atmospheric river a year and a clogged gutter can cost you a $12K interior wall repair. A 90-minute pre-storm visit — clear, flow test, downspout extension — prevents most of it.

DIY vs. hire — which makes sense for your job

When DIY works

If you're comfortable on a ladder and have time for a boring job, gutter cleaning is DIY — a scoop, a bucket, and a hose. Most single-story homes: 2-3 hours. Where DIY gets risky: two-story homes (ladder height + wet debris), gutter guards (properly fitting them), leak repair (seam sealing requires prep), drainage planning (water routing affects foundation).

When to hire

A pro brings an extension ladder, ladder standoffs (so the ladder doesn't crush gutters), a scoop, and a leaf blower for faster clearing. Most single-family gutter clean + flush: 1-2 hours. Leak repair + guards: 2-4 hours. Full inspection is free as part of cleaning.

Permit, license, and safety

Gutter work is handyman scope. No permit, no license required for standard residential cleaning, repair, or guard install. §7048 applies.

Exception: full gutter replacement + fascia work on a multi-story home that exceeds $500 threshold technically pushes into CSLB-licensed territory, though most shops handle this as part of a roofing or siding project. French drain installation over 150 linear feet may trigger a drainage permit in some LA jurisdictions.
